"Culture and Russian society": Conference in Helsinki, Finland

On 21-23 October, 2015 the University of Helsinki (Finland) hosted the 15th annual Aleksanteri conference, the theme of which was formulated as "Culture and Russian society". The conference brought together scientists from Finland, Russia, Poland, Germany, Canada, England, Italy, Belgium, Kazakhstan etc. Participation of scientists from different countries led to very interesting discussions.

The conference was attended by members of the Media Linguistic Commission of the International Slavists Committee, who held the panel discussion "The Language of Mass Media as a Means of Cultural Transmission". Discussion was opened by Lilia R. Duskaeva, PhD, Professor, Head of the Media Linguistic Commission, Head of the Department of Speech Communication at St. Petersburg State University. She made a report on the conceptualization of national culture values in the semantic and stylistic categories of evaluation. The discussion was continued by the reports of PhDs Yulia M. Konyaeva, Natalia A. Prokofeva and Alexey A. Goryachev. Yulia M. Konyaeva talked about the communicative scenarios of the "portrait of a man" speech genre in the newspaper periodicals. Natalia A. Prokofeva dedicated her speech to the problem of speech representation of cultural events in Russian periodicals. Alexey A. Goryachev concentrated on the ways of cultural projects promotion in new media. The reports provoked questions from the guests attending the debate. The results of the panel discussion were summed up by V. A. Sidorov, Professor, PhD, who emphasized the relevance of the issues addressed and the productivity of the approaches offered for their solution.
